France - Brittany

Bands • Sacred Choir • Secular Choir • Marching Band

  • Celtic corner of France
  • Magnificent coastline
  • Real cultural experience

Jutting right out into the Atlantic and owner of France’s most westerly point, Brittany has always been associated with myths and a culture quite separate from the rest of the country. Brittany is blessed with 750 miles of coastline, ranging from dramatic cliffs to some of Europe’s most beautiful sandy beaches. Inland, Brittany is just as beautiful, as well as varied, and there are many towns and chateaux well worth visiting.

Concerts

Concert tours here work particularly well during the summer months, when there are plenty of visitors to the area and when we can arrange concerts in courtyards, squares and bandstands. Groups wanting to travel at other times of the year, particularly within French term-time, would be best to stay in Langoelan, where we have excellent contacts with local schools for joint concerts or musical presentations to the students. We can also arrange for you to perform in the local town hall, when usually the mayor attends, as well as a large number of the town folk!

Sample itinerary for band (Langoelan)

Day 1 - Early morning departure from school for morning ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre. Evening arrival in Langoelan

Day 2 - Depart for full day at a local school for time with students and a concert performance. Evening at leisure at the centre.

Day 3 - Morning visit to Vannes to enjoy the market. Return to Langoelan for afternoon rehearsal in the Salle Polyvalente for evening concert. After concert, continue on to attend a festival of Breton Dancing.

Day 4 - Morning visit to the swimming pool in Carhaix. Afternoon visit to and concert in Quimper. Evening’s bowling.

Day 5 - Morning departure for afternoon ferry crossing and late evening arrival home

St Malo - Coastal Brittany

St Malo lies on Brittany’s northern coast, just over the border from Normandy’s most famous landmark, Mont St Michel. 14th century ramparts surround the Old Town and within these you will find a myriad of small streets containing shops, cafes and the town’s museum. You can enjoy the market on Tuesdays and Fridays, stroll along the sandy beach or visit the town’s aquarium.

Accommodation

Just 150m from the beach, the Centre Patrick Varangot lies in a quiet location about 2km from the walled town. The centre has around 250 beds, ranging from 2-8 beds, all with shower and some with wc. Facilities include meeting rooms, TV, table tennis as well as basketball/volleyball courts in the grounds.

Langoelan - Inland Brittany

Langoelan is a village lying amidst the rolling hills so typical of inland Brittany. The region is studded with interesting sites to see, such as the towns of Vannes and Quimper.

The coast is about a 40 minute coach journey and we would particularly recommend the port of Concarneau, with its walled old town which is reached by crossing a drawbridge.

Accommodation

Our centre in Langoelan, l’Ancienne Ecole, offers a friendly welcome to our groups. Once a school, it has been been converted into a youth centre and can house just one group at a time (maximum 48 students and 8 staff). Students sleep in dormitories with bathrooms on the corridor, while staff are accommodated in single and twin rooms with separate bathroom facilities for staff. The centre has meeting rooms, as well as plenty of grounds for recreation. It is possible to rehearse at the centre.
