Germany - Berlin

Youth Orchestra • Sacred Choir • Secular Choir • Band

  • Vibrant and youthful city
  • Fascinating blend of east and west
  • Home to iconic 20th century landmarks

Berlin has evolved in recent years from being the symbol of the East/West division to the place where the two now meet and entwine. Berlin is a unique and fascinating city, which, since the fall of the Wall in 1989 has become one of Europe’s most buzzing capital cities. The colourful remains of the wall, sites of National Socialist conferences and the Prussian palaces are evidence of just some of the momentous historical events which have taken place here, while the city also displays the cutting edge in modern architecture.

Concerts

Concerts are possible for both choirs and orchestras in the famous Gethsemanekirche in the trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg in the former East Berlin. Berlin Cathedral and St.George's Anglican Church welcome choirs and recitals. Many more churches, if less well known, are hugely enthusiastic when receiving groups. The Augustinum Retirement centre has a purpose-built theatre and is very keen to receive our groups. There are many outdoor locations for concerts in the central Tiergarten, the lakeside in Weissensse and outside the city in the gardens at Potsdam and the castle of Sanssouci. Why not go further afield and cross the border into Poland (2 hour drive) and perform in the castle precinct in Szczecin?

Excursions

Checkpoint Charlie: exhibition at the point of the infamous border crossing between East and West Berlin.

East Side Gallery: longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall.

Kurfürstendam: Berlin’s famous shopping boulevard.

Potsdamer Platz: huge walk-in information box showing the development of today’s Berlin.

Outside Berlin

Sachsenhausen concentration camp: 30kms from Berlin, this is a sobering but worthwhile visit.
