Physical Geography Topics

A Upland Glacial Features
In the Alpine environment there are significant landforms produced by glacial erosion and deposition such as ‘U’- shaped valleys, cirques, truncated spurs and moraines. The dynamics of a glacier itself can be studied on the Gross Glockner, while at Zell am See there is a significant glacial lake.

B Fluvial Processes and Features
These can be studied along a local river basin, where flood control schemes are in place.

Human Geography Topics

A Settlement Studies
Saalbach can be used as an example for studies in spatial and temporal changes, being an old farming settlement, which has which has grown rapidly due to tourism, especially skiing. Zell am See is very useful for more extensive urban investigations.

B Farming
A detailed case study of a farm can be carried out to discover the physical, economic and cultural influences on land use and agriculture.

C Tourism
Saalbach and the ‘Ski Circus’ is an important ski resort. Fieldwork can include the provision of ski facilities, their impact on the environment, and the consequent ‘multiplier effect’ on the local economy.

D Physical-Human Interrelationships
There are opportunities to study specific interrelationships between the physical environment and human activities, especially:

  • The development of Hydro-electric Power Schemes
  • The influence of mountain landforms and environment on the development of tourism
  • The environmental impact of tourism and recreation in the area, especially skiing
