France - Opal Coast

History & Citizenship

The Opal Coast, which stretches from the Belgian border to the Somme estuary, offers a wide range of visits for school trips of all types. From the busy ports of Calais and Boulogne to the sandy beaches and holiday resorts of Le Touquet and Berck, visitors to the Opal Coast will experience real France without travelling far from home.

Stella Plage

This small seaside resort lies just 3 kms south of Le Touquet. It has wide sandy beaches and a range of local shops, as well as the wider range of amenities in nearby Le Touquet. It has a typical French feel and makes an ideal base from which to explore this wonderful area.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 - Morning departure from school, arriving Calais about noon. Visit to La Coupole, near St Omer, or perhaps Ambleteuse WW1 museum or Montreuil (depending on your centre). Dinner in centre.

Day 2 - Visit Nausicaa (the National Sea Experience Centre). Then onto a typical French bakery at Neufchatel-Hardelot, where your students will help bake baguettes and croissants, or perhaps visit the chocolate factory at Beussent. Then onto Bagatelle amusement park at Merlimont. Or half-day visit to a local market followed by visit to sweet factory or snail farm (tasting!), alternatively visit Etaples (fish market and war cemetery) then onto Bagatelle. After dinner, either karaoke or disco evening in centre or (driver’s hours permitting) bowling at Berck.

Day 3 - Depart after breakfast and drive to Calais, perhaps visiting the bakery at Neufchatel, a market visit or hypermarket (Cité Europe).

Afternoon Channel crossing for early evening return home.
