Switzerland - Geneva & CERN

Citizenship & Physics

Little more than town-sized yet home to UNOG, the European headquarters of the United Nations, Geneva is a truly international city which is nevertheless compact and easy to find your way around. Its location is stunning, set on the shores of the lake of the same name and surrounded by the Jura and Savoy mountains.

Geneva is also host to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, the world’s largest particle physics centre. Founded in 1954, CERN has been responsible for a number of ground-breaking discoveries, perhaps the most significant ones being the invention and development of the World Wide Web, and the creation of the world's highest energy particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, as featured in Dan Brown’s book ‘Angels and Demons’. Over 20,000 visitors come to CERN every year, which include students, for which special tours can be arranged.

Your visit to CERN

School visits at CERN are as follows:

30 minute introduction to CERN by one of the English-speaking guides
10 minute film about CERN Question time
2 hour visit of one of the following (your choice, to be made in advance of the visit):

  • The LHC Experimental Sites
  • The Antimatter Factory
