Straddling a high Col in the towering Tauern range, Obertauern, at over 1700m, is one of Austria’s highest resorts. The large and well-designed lift system carries skiers to exciting and interesting runs on circular tours of the region in either direction. The ski season runs from November to May. As the resort is quite enclosed, evening entertainments are not far away, while the houses we use have excellent in-house facilities to keep students occupied in the evening.

The skiing

The many access points from the village serve to keep queues to a minimum and there is a choice of nursery areas for beginners. For intermediate and advanced skiers a fantastic range of slopes opens up, mainly above the tree line, with some challenging open runs as well as narrow couloirs. The careful design of the area and the modern lift system enable intermediates to achieve rapid progress and to succeed in making a complete circular tour of the area at a relatively early stage.

Jugendgästehaus GotschallalmThis pretty, family-run house offers considerable flexibility for large mixed groups or for several smaller groups of differing ages. The house has two floors, each can be divided into two, giving four self-contained units if required. Similar flexibility extends to the dining rooms. The student rooms are mostly 6 bedded (with three 8 bedded). Both student and leaders’ rooms have private showers and toilets. Amenities include tuck shop, TV, video, table tennis room and disco room. Leaders have their own bar and stüberl. The house lies about 400m from the main road, about 2km from the lifts and 4km from the centre of Obertauern.
