At 1883m, Passo Tonale is one of Italy’s highest ski resorts. It is high enough to offer summer skiing (on the Presena glacier), a long season and excellent snow record, now reinforced by snow cannons on 50-plus km of its pistes. The compact lift system rises directly from the village and queues are normally due to the advanced and comprehensive lift system. December 2006 also saw the opening of a new 8 person lift, connecting Fonale with Ponte di Legno. The skiing is excellent for beginners and intermediates and provides a good variety and progression of slopes.

The skiing

Every ski ability is catered for on terrain with deep powder bowls and long, wide, groomed runs. It has 10 runs that are more than 4 km long. There is an exceptional nursery area and intermediates can ski both sides of the valley and progress easily and swiftly. The north slopes have excellent terrain for beginners and intermediates and are comprehensively served by 16 lifts up to an altitude 2680m at Contrabandieri (“Smugglers Pass”). The south facing slopes provide more challenging terrain for intermediate and advanced skiers, with the added advantage of glacier skiing (subject to weather conditions). Alternatively Ponte di Legno, which is also included on your ski pass, provides a beautiful scenic run with which to end the day and is linked to Tonale with a free ski bus service.

Après ski

As you’d expect in a purpose-built resort there’s a good choice of après ski. Here, none of it is particularly expensive. Tonale also has a good range of friendly bars, shops, and restaurants used to catering for both local and visiting youngsters. With the help of your Ski Rep, you can put together a full week’s programme of evening entertainments. These include

  • Ice-skating • Dogsled rides
  • Snowshoe walking
  • Torch-lit descents
  • Disco evenings
