The benefits of skiing for young people from secondary schools and 6th form students

Snowboarding and school ski trips are ideal activities for students whether they are innately sporty or not. The thrill of learning a new skill, in a new environment, in a completely different culture is one everyone can share. The exercise benefits are huge: students will do hours of intensive exercise without even being aware of it.

Success in skiing relies more on acquiring the right technique than on physical strength and can be a very rewarding sport to learn.

Skiing supports the National Curriculum in students' physical, sporting, mental and social development. It can:

  • create a new and different appreciation of physical activity in a non-competitive atmosphere
  • develop an interest and confidence in pursuing an active lifestyle
  • inspire a sense of challenge, achievement and opportunity to succeed
  • increase fitness and wellbeing and develop an activity that can become a lifelong pursuit
  • increase awareness and respect for the environment; and
  • improve language skills
