'The girls loved every moment and felt so encouraged and excited about the enthusiasm from the audiences'

A 35-strong choir from Johannesburg have just returned from a fabulous school music trip to Vienna, Salzburg and Venice.

The music trip was entirely tailored to this very unique group.

Performing many traditional African songs, the choir accompanied by the piano, violin, clarinet and djembe drums performed in Vienna’s church in Reindorf, a church affiliated to FOSA (Friends of South Africa), as well as in the protestant church in Bad Ischl and in the concert hall in Bad Hofgastein.

Elsabé Fourie, Kingsmead College’s, Director of Music, was delighted with the response her young musicians received from audiences on the tour:

“The girls loved every moment and felt so encouraged and excited about the enthusiasm from the audiences.

“The concerts served as a wonderful reminder to us of how unique our own traditional music is and the audiences’ enthusiastic and emotional response took us by surprise. It was humbling and incredibly encouraging for our girls.

“Thank you for an absolutely fantastic trip! You and your team made it so easy. The itinerary was so well planned, detailed and thought through. Thank you for your patience, the meticulous planning of every little detail and your care and investment in our tour.”

The itinerary for Kingsmead’s tour was designed to be as culturally enriching as possible: In Vienna, they visited the Belvedere Palace Baroque, which houses art from the Middle Ages to today and also Stephen’s Cathedral, the House of Music and Schönbrunn Palace. While in Salzburg they went to Hohensalzburg Fortress, took a boat tour to Strobl, visited the Hellbrunn Palace, Trick Water Gardens and the Salt mines in Hallein.

When in Venice, their programme included visits to the Doge’s Palace, the Scrovegni Chapel and Palazzo Zuckerman, a museum full of art and artifacts from everyday life spanning several centuries. They also took a cruise on the Burchiello along the Brenta River and enjoyed day trips to Treviso and Verona.

Summing up the tour Elsabé commented: “It was an exceptional, life changing experience for our girls. It was the best tour we could have hoped for. The girls and parents haven’t stopped thanking us.”
