Helen Davies, Director of Music, St. Christopher’s CE High School, Lancashire is back at school tackling all the beginning of term chores every teacher faces. But memories of her school music tour to Tenerife this summer are still fresh.

“We had yet another superb school music trip this summer with great concert venues, excellent hotel and a fabulous itinerary; all with excellent support and planning throughout. It was a complete success and enjoyed by all!

“Puerto de La Cruz was an absolutely perfect and very safe destination. The north of the island is much more beautiful than the south and the town itself had everything we could need as well as easy access to all the venues.

“The location of the hotel in a pedestrian street is absolutely super. It’s in the centre of the town and within walking distance of all the local amenities, shops and sea water pools; it was good for the pupils to be able to walk out the front door and wander round the shops in small groups. It was one of the best places we have ever stayed, and we were made to feel so welcome. On the final night the hotel let us arrange an impromptu concert on the street outside – a great success.

“Our coach drivers were excellent at all times, and had excellent local knowledge.

“It was good to see the concert in the Plaza advertised in the Festival programme and the local tourist office lady met us and was a great host for the concert. She had prepared some gifts for the pupils and they loved these. It was good to be made to feel so welcome, appreciated and to be invited back!

“Our concert in the cathedral was a tremendous success. I have never heard the choirs sing better on any tour or any concert at home. I was able to speak in English to the audience and they loved the music and the choirs. Some of the audience paid us some lovely compliments!

“There is obviously some good choral music happening in that part of Tenerife and it was good to meet a conductor from the university choir who wants to do a concert with us in the auditorium in Santa Cruz. “Basso, our tour manager, was outstanding and was most definitely the best tour manager we have ever had. He went above and beyond what was required. He was incredibly helpful throughout. He had a great sense of humour and nothing was ever too much trouble. His local knowledge was invaluable.

“We enjoyed the visit to the Teide National park; Mary and Basso had the kids captivated throughout.

“Lucy, at Club Europe, was as ever, completely fabulous. Her knowledge of what will work and what won’t is excellent; she’s always there when questions need to be asked and she answers promptly and efficiently. Our performances seem to have made a hit so going back may be a possibility!”
